Welcome to BabyBoomerBakes!

Hi! I’m Nikki Norman, a Florida food and travel blogger, plus award-winning recipe developer, food stylist, and food photographer.

I hope you feel a warm welcome when you visit my blog, just like a guest in my home. Stay awhile, browse around and share your comments on blog posts. I look forward to our conversations here.

If you’re like me I’ll bet you recall your first cooking adventure. At age four, Grandmother helped me bake a Jiffy cake; chocolate with chocolate with frosting. I proudly served portions of the frosted single cake layer from the 9-inch aluminum pan.

From the first bite of my cake, I was hooked on learning everything about food. I wanted to learn to read, just to understand cookbooks. Now for decades I’ve been on a never-ending journey to expand my culinary knowledge. I follow cutting-edge food trends as closely as the latest fashion trends.

I became one of the most successful competitive home cooks in America; winning hundreds of cooking awards for my original recipes; both pastry and savory. I decided to pull back from competitive cooking after I found myself entering a contest with the prize being a milk cow. Where will I donate that? Thank goodness I lost!

In 2000, I was featured on the original PBS television series MasterChef USA, as one of the best home cooks in America, representing the South. I’ve been featured on the Food Network several times (Sutter Home Build a Better Burger Cook-off, Whirlpool’s America’s Ultimate Cake Contest, National Pie Championship, and National Cornbread Festival Cook-off), plus presented live cooking segments on regional television in Nashville, Tennessee. I’ve won the Grand Prize in two national recipe video contests for the National American Lamb Board and Harris Teeter supermarkets, plus the Grand Prize in an international pastry competition open to home cooks and professional pastry chefs.

I’m flattered my food styling, food photography and food writing has been professionally used along with many of my original recipes in cookbooks, on product packaging and for promotional campaigns.

My latest culinary interest in food and travel blogging has a natural fit with professional recipe development and judging national cooking contests.

So I hope you’ll take the time now to bookmark BabyBoomerBakes while you’re here, and join in a blog post conversation.

  3. Hi, Thanks for the follow. I’m following back and looking forward to seeing your recipes.

  4. Thanks for the follow, Nikki! I’m looking forward to browsing through your “cookbook!”

  5. An interesting blog, Nikki. I’m glad you stumbled upon our blog…and while we occasionally reference cooking (usually in context of Crohn’s disease or food allergies), our kitchen prowess leaves a bit to be desired! Perhaps we can pick up some tips from you. And yes, I too remember with fondness the Jiffy cakes I made as a kid!

  6. hello Nikki.. thanks for visiting my blog and following me …. you have a lovely blog here….

  7. Hi Nikki! When I saw that you just became a new follower on my blog, I had to check out your “About” page to see what kinds of things you write about. Haven’t gotten any further than this page and already I was impressed enough to become YOUR follower too! I can’t do glance through your entries much until after Thanksgiving, however, ’cause I’m in the middle of prep for the holiday.

First of all, today is a cooking/baking day for me for our daughter’s workplace’s big chili & bake sale/ raffle day tomorrow. Most years, they raise about $4,000 or more and give it to the local food pantry. This year, all proceeds will be split between the food pantry and agencies helping NYC and Long Island victims of Hurricane Sandy. It’s the 2nd year I’ve volunteered to donate by conjuring up a pot of chili for it (I do mean “conjure” cuz they like to get a few “new” or “different” kinds of chili along with the standards– and this morning I created a pumpkin/sweet potato one, with chicken & beans! Also made a batch of cheesy cornbread. Next, once I’ve rested by feet from standing so much all morning (not just the cooking/baking– there are all those dirty dishes and pans to take care of– the downside of my love for kitchen activities!), I’ll either bake a batch of cupcakes or cookies. Tomorrow is when I’ll get serious about our own Thanksgiving food, after delivering all of the above to Kristen’s NYS agency by 10 a.m.

Looking forward to reading your blogposts. And incidentally, I love that you’re also a Baby Boomer, like me!

    • Hi Marilyn, yes that’s great we are both Baby Boomers! I look forward to following your blog. That’s great about the fund-raiser for the food pantry. How wonderful! I’m sure you are so proud to be involved in this effort. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

I think my cooking is pretty good, but hey, I am a man and I just like to eat. I also eat with a 100 pound German Shepherd beside me, so we are usually in competition for the food. His name is Turbo and he is my K9 partner. He likes my cooking, but he isn’t too particular.
